American Documents on Greek Occupation of Anatolia

On 15 May 1919, Greek troops landed in Izmir under the protection of British, French and Greek warships. This was the beginning of a dark period in Turkish history that would last for three years. Following the Allied forces’ defeat of the Ottomans in the First World War and the unconditional surrender of Turkish troops in compliance with the Mudros Armistice of 30 October 1918, the Greek government was very enthusiastic about sending military forces to Anatolia and occupying, even annexing, some Turkish territories. However, it was not the diplomatic manoeuvres of Athens but of London that paved the way for Greek occupation.
